Dr. Chang is the past Chair of the American Board of Urology Examination Committee, responsible for U.S. board certification. He is the current Treasurer and Board Member of the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) and Trustee of the American Board of Urology. Dr. Chang formerly chaired the American Joint Committee of the GU Cancer Staging Task Force (2004-2013) and the AUA Guidelines on Bladder Cancer and was a member of the AUA Guidelines on Renal Cancer and SUO Guidelines on Advanced Prostate Cancer. Dr. Chang has served on multiple journal editorial boards. He is an active member of many professional organizations, including the American Urology Association (AUA), American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons (AAGUS), American Board of Urology (ABU), and the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN). In 2024, the American Urological Association presented Dr. Chang with the Hugh Hampton Young Award, which is presented annually to an individual for outstanding contributions to the study of genitourinary tract diseases.

Dr. Chang is particularly interested in urologic cancer, with a focus on urologic oncology and education. He has been instrumental in integrating evidence-based medicine into clinical pathways, enhancing national guidelines, and improving urologic cancer staging. Dr. Chang has also played a key role in initiating and expanding several cancer-related treatment protocols at Vanderbilt University and on a national scale.
